Open-heart surgery services in Zimbabwe became difficult to sustain and the regular programme described in medical literature ended in 2003.

A peer-reviewed review describes efforts that culminated in February 2016 when Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals resumed open-heart operations with support from a South Korean clinical team and donated equipment. It reports 11 predominantly paediatric operations during an eight-day visit.

A revival is not proof of permanent universal access. The authors discuss continuing constraints in staff retention, supplies, financing and specialist facilities.

This story celebrates local healthcare workers' determination while recording the systemic challenges that affected patients. We need records from later years to verify which services continued and when.
