In the early hours of 24 December 2024, two friends in Gweru responded after a man sought help for his wife who was in labour. Published reporting names journalist Patrick Chitumba and Tinashe Chikwata as the men who responded.

According to a report in The Herald, the two phoned Dr Tafara Gapare for guidance and assisted until the mother and newborn could be taken to Mkoba Polyclinic. The report also included comments from the medical practitioner about why professional maternity care is essential.

Gweru City Council recognised Chitumba and Chikwata with a Delivery of Hope award in January 2025, according to a separate Chronicle report. This is a documented recognition, not a claim that the two men had medical training.

The mother's and child's medical details are not needed to celebrate the action. Their names, health and family circumstances are intentionally left out. The story honours help that arrived during an emergency, not unsupervised medical procedures.
