In July 1980, months after independence, Zimbabwe's women's hockey team travelled to Moscow with little preparation. The tournament was the first women's hockey competition at the Olympics, and the Zimbabwe squad emerged unbeaten to take gold.

On 31 July, Zimbabwe defeated Austria 4–1 to secure the title. The International Hockey Federation has published captain Ann Grant's memories of the surprise campaign, and historical Olympic records identify the 16 members of the medal-winning squad.

The team consisted of white Zimbabwean players at a time of enormous political change; that historical detail matters and should not be concealed. The achievement also belongs within a broader effort to research how access, representation and women's participation in Zimbabwean hockey evolved after 1980.

OurPride aims to preserve the names and contributions of all 16 players and their coaches, alongside the schools, clubs and volunteers that sustained women's hockey, rather than retell only one player's recollections.
