Zimbabwe's national cricket team entered the 1983 Cricket World Cup and won its opening match against Australia by 13 runs at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The International Cricket Council includes the result in its account of Zimbabwe's early international history.

The victory came two years after Zimbabwe joined the ICC as an associate member, before the country's elevation to Test status in 1992. The team's captain Duncan Fletcher and other players contributed to the result; it should be remembered as a collective achievement.

OurPride should build an accessible archive of national cricket squads, scorecards, coaches, schools and club cricket in the years after independence. The 1983 win is a doorway into those stories rather than an excuse to celebrate only a handful of headline batters.
